Not only are they visually appealing and wonderfully fragrant, they provide your fish with cover and help keep the algae down in your pond. Water lilies need at least 5 hours of sunlight a day and calm water. With water lilies you have many varieties to choose from, the two general types are hardy and tropical. Hardy water lilies will reward you year after year with abundant foliage and a wide variety of colorful flowers. Tropical water lilies have leaves with serrated edges and they stand above the water.
Lotuses are popular even though they have a reputation of being hard to grow or tropical. While it is true that they may overwhelm a small pond they do not need any more care than a water lily once established. The only real requirement of a Lotus is that they have two to three months of daytime temperatures over 80 degrees F. Most Lotus will only bloom for three days, but they change colors each day. Calla Lily is a marginal plant or shallow water plant from Africa. It will grow to be 2 to 3 foot tall with shiny, arrow shaped leaves. The cup shaped, fragrant, white flower surrounds a club. Calla lilies should be grown in a container of heavy soil under a foot of water. They can also be grown in garden beds, they will tolerate a wide range of soils provided the soil is moist.
The Iris has long been a favorite Water Garden Pond Plants because it is easy to grow, suffers from few pests or diseases, and offers various heights, flower, and foliage colors. Yellow and blue flag irises love being wet, but the staple Iris for water gardeners is the Japanese Iris. The Japanese iris is considered the most beautiful of all irises. The yellow flag (Iris pseudacorus) is the only yellow water garden iris. Yellow flags bloom in late spring. They like deep water and can be kept with the top of the pot a foot below the surface of the water. The blue flag iris (Iris versicolor) likes a constant water level of 2 to 4 inches above the pot. The flowers are a delicate mix of purple, violet, yellow, and white.
Pickerel weed (Pontederia) or pickerel rush has several varieties. Flowers could be blue, lavender, pink or white, with heights ranging from 1 to 4 feet. They have spiked summer flowers and attract bees and butterflies. The pickerel family is clump-habited and easy to care for. They are an interesting plant with heart-shaped leaves. They are native all over the United States and are very hardy marginal’s. Pickerel weed grows best when they have adequate room to spread. Pickerel are heavy feeders and will perform best in light shade or full sun.
