The Top 20 Best Public Gardens to Visit in the United States

The Top 20 Best Public Gardens to Visit in the United States

For the past year I’ve been compiling a list of Public Gardens in the United States for my gardening website.  These gardens all look like fantastic places to visit, but what are the most popular?

The most popular public gardens (based on online chatter) in the USA are:

20. New Orleans Botanical Garden in New Orleans, Louisiana

…a tie for #20…

20. Cleveland Botanical Garden in Cleveland, Ohio

19. Beaumont Botanical Gardens in Beaumont, Texas

18. Memphis Botanic Garden in Memphis, Tennessee

17. San Antonio Botanical Garden in San Antonio, Texas

16. Missouri Botanical Garden in Saint Louis, Missouri

15. Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing, New York

14. New York Botanical Garden in Bronx, New York

13. Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

12. Denver Botanic Gardens in Denver, Colorado

11. Green Bay Botanical Garden in Green Bay, Wisconsin

10. Atlanta Botanical Garden in Atlanta, Georgia

9. Hershey Gardens in Hershey, Pennsylvania

8. Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah

7. Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, Alabama

6. Chicago Botanic Garden in Chicago, Illinois

5. Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in Santa Barbara, California

4. San Francisco Botanical Garden in San Francisco, California

3. United States Botanic Garden in Washington, District of Columbia

2. Brooklyn Botanic Garden in Brooklyn, New York

…and the most popular public garden in the United States of America is…

1. United States National Arboretum in Washington, District of Columbia

We have an excellent mix of public gardens in the United States, with fourteen states and the District of Columbia making it into the top twenty.  New York, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, Texas, and California placed multiple times.  Also nice to see a mix around the country, with gardens on each coast and scattered throughout the country.

So get out there and visit some of these magnificent botanical gardens and arboretums, and be sure to take the time to smell the roses … and orchids!

I compiled this list by searching for each public garden listed on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online.

Help answer the question about garden

My garden is boggy and wet and holds lots of water. How can I dry it out?
I currently live in Germany and our house is on the edge of a large Forrest. My garden holds a lot of water and is very soft under foot. Without installing a proper drainage system, how can I dry it out?
